Celebrating 100 Years of Paso Robles Winemaking: The Parrish Family Legacy

Celebrating a Century of Parrish Family

Winemaking on the Central Coast

This year, Parrish Family Vineyard proudly celebrates 100 years of winemaking heritage in Paso Robles. The story began in 1925, when Earl Henderson—grandfather of our founder, David Parrish—moved to Atascadero. As one of the founding fathers of the town, Henderson received Atascadero’s very first P.O. Box—P.O. Box 1. By 1927, he was managing about 740 acres of vineyards and had planted more than 500 acres of Zinfandel, Alicante Bouschet, and Charbono. Notably, the Zinfandel cuttings came from the esteemed Paderewski Ranch, reflecting his dedication to quality from the very start.

During the Prohibition era, while the sale of alcoholic beverages was banned, the cultivation of grapes remained legal. Henderson capitalized on this by growing grape varieties like Alicante Bouschet, known for its thick skin and deep color, making it ideal for transport and home winemaking. This strategic choice allowed him to sustain his vineyards and contribute to the region's agricultural resilience during challenging times.

Inspired by his grandfather's pioneering spirit, David Parrish pursued viticulture, graduating from U.C. Davis in 1974. He founded A&P Ag Structures, a vineyard trellising company that collaborated with renowned wineries such as Robert Mondavi and Beringer. In 2004, David returned to his roots, establishing Parrish Family Vineyard. The winery's tasting room, opened in 2018 on Adelaida Road, was designed to reflect the charm of the original family home in Creston, offering visitors an authentic Paso Robles wine experience.

There are a lot of options and factors that make barrel decisions complex for the winemaker. It is an important decision as the chosen vessel will direct the structure and flavor profile of the wine.

The 2024 vintage was a hot vintage with an extremely warm and long Summer in Paso Robles. We began harvest on August 30th with our Sauvignon Blanc and completed harvest on October 16th with Petite Sirah and Grenache. To give us a little more insight, we caught up with Winemaker, Cody Alt to learn more about the vintage. How did the hot weather impact the harvest? Cody: It was reminiscent of the 2022 vintage. Our yields were lower for us as well as most of Paso Robles. David said it is not uncommon for vines to auto-regulate after a high-yield year. Last year (2023) we had a much milder Summer and a cool Fall, which increased our yield.
